It’s hardly an overstatement that many of us hope 2017 will be an improvement on its predecessor. In my case, after a fast-paced 2016, I hope that this year will be slower (hence being slow in writing my first 2017 post for green stilettos). Here are a few things I’d like to take slowly this year…
Slow fashion is, of course, a no-brainer given that I have been a staunch opponent of fast fashion. Recently, I was delighted to learn about a great initiative by Helvetas Switzerland called Slow Fashion Container. The idea is to buy an entire container of organic cotton in Mali and to produce 100,000 t-shirts designed by British designer and activist Katharine Hamnett. Every production step along their one-year journey will be documented. You can literally watch your t-shirt grow in Mali, be spun and woven in Greece, and welcome it on arrival in Switzerland this spring.
Slow food was, in many ways, the inspiration behind slow fashion. The movement originated in the 1980s in Italy, a country that knows how to enjoy a meal without rushing it. Since then it has expanded internationally, working with farmers, restaurateurs and schools around the world to promote healthy and authentic food. This year, I am pledging to eat slowly and mindfully.
One of the best books I’ve read about eating well is Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual by Michael Pollan. He boils the central question of ‘What should I eat?’ to three simple rules: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. But you should definitely read his book to understand what he means.
At a time when many of us are aiming for lightening-speed connections and ever-expanding bandwidths, I choose to slow down on my Internet consumption. Last year I have become increasingly aware of how social media are eating into my day’s routine. So I decided to start 2017 with a digital detox – and loved it!
This year, I will be more disciplined about putting my smart phone aside, and will endeavour to put my kids of a digital diet, as well. For parents grappling with their children’s online addition, check out this trailer for the powerful documentary SCREENAGERS.
Happy Slow Year to all of you!
