Style vs. Fashion – A Lesson From An Icon

BY Green Stilettos / Apr 19, 2013

Fashion, Lifestyle, Random thoughts

OK, we are down to letter S in the green-to-glam ideas from A to Z challenge, and this week’s article is dedicated to style, as opposed to fashion.

By its very essence, fashion is transitory, while style is timeless. Have you ever heard of anyone or anything being “out of style”? This is why choosing style over fashion is a great step towards sustainability.

Instead of getting this season’s must-haves, we can shop for “investment pieces” – a great pair of stilettos (yay!), an LBD, or a signature scarf – which are far less likely to go out of fashion.

My all-time style icon is Audrey Hepburn. I know I am not the only one who admires her pillbox hats, ballerina shoes, shift dresses and cropped trousers.

I have this wonderful coffee-table book published by the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum which is a real treasure trove of unique photos of Audrey Hepburn and her wardrobe full of exquisite haute couture and prêt-à-porter creations.

But as amazing as these photos are, what struck me most was the preface by Sean Hepburn Ferrer, the son of the actress, who wrote: “Style is a word we use often and for a multitude of purposes. In the case of my mother, Audrey Hepburn, it was the extension if an inner beauty held up by a life of discipline, respect for the other and hope in humanity.”

“If the lines were pure and elegant it was because she believed in the power of simplicity. If there was timelessness it was because she believed in quality and if she still is an icon of style today it is because once she found her look she stayed with it throughout her life. She didn’t go with the trends, didn’t reinvent herself every season. She loved fashion but kept it as a tool to compliment her look.”

A priceless lesson from an icon of style, don’t you think?

Still on the subject of sustainable style, after some hesitation, I decided to throw my hat in the rink for the Fashion Blogger Sustainable Fashion Outfit Competition run by style_is, the biggest and most stylishly sustainable UK online fashion store.

I really like the fact that the winner will be selected based on style_is jury’s favourite combination of individual style and sustainability.

It also seemed like a great way to showcase some photos of me taken by the immensely talented photographer Asheline Appleton.

According to the terms of the competition, I have to explain what I’m wearing and what makes my outfit sustainable.

So here we go!

On this photo I am wearing a vintage coat from a quirky Korean boutique in Sydney, Australia and a simple yet elegant no-name dress rescued from an outlet north of Milan that stocks end-of-season fashions.

Needless to say, I am wearing my signature stiletto heels – a pair of boots from Navyboot, which are made in Switzerland where I live (and where, incidentally, Audrey Hepburn spent a lot of her time as well!).

The average age of this outfit is 8 years.

My style can be described as that of a global nomad – I have lived and worked on three continents and my wardrobe reflects that. And of course I would love to think that it is also glam-and-green!

Until next week,

Stylishly yours,
